Wood
Wood used to be worked by hand with a wooden marking gauge, handsaw, hammer, chisel and plane – simple tools that can produce amazing results in expert hands. On this course you will be first introduced to the Block plane, and then you will make a frame using various joints (half-lap, box, mortise and tenon) to develop a feel for this beautiful natural product.
It is wonderful to see how quickly woodturning creates a shape under your hands. Think of candlesticks, chair legs, chess pieces, wheels, pulleys, decorative knobs, axles and wooden hammers. In this individual course, the emphasis is on the technique of carving. Also covered are scraping techniques, tools, suitable types of wood, turning profiles, finishing and, of course, safety. Once you have acquired a taste and skill, you will probably not be able to resist.
